Imaginary Terraces (San Pablo Oztotepec, Mexico, DF)
by: Eduardo Torres Veytia (2008)
San Pablo Oztotepec is one of the twelve towns that correspond to the delegation of Milpa Alta, in the Federal District (Mexico City), which is at the south of the city.
The urban landscape of Milpa Alta, is the result of the natural environment changed over the history, first by different ethnic groups that formed agricultural societies of Mexico Basin, and then the community members under the dominion of the Spaniards and their heirs, all participated in the construction and maintenance of a complex system of farming terraces whose remains are now mostly planted by nopal.
The emergence of new urban activities has caused some changes in land use, creating changes in rural architecture and public spaces. One advantage is that Milpa Alta maintains a unique product of its attractive natural setting, topography of steep slopes, buildings stepped to fit into the field. To the above must be added the dominant presence of the natural landscape marked by large volcanoes.
